Public Asked to Comment on California Quarry Proposal

A draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been prepared for a proposed 403-acre mining operation by Sargent Ranch Partners LLC on approximately 403-acres in Santa Clara County, Calif. The public comment period opens on July 25  and closes on Sept. 26.

“Your comments regarding the significant environmental effects of this project and the adequacy of the Draft EIR are welcome. Written comments should be submitted by Monday, Sept., 26, at 5:00 p.m. and will be included and responded to in the Final EIR,” stated the County of Santa Clara Department of Planning and Development.

Comments can be addressed to Robert Salisbury, senior planner at [email protected].

A meeting to receive comments on the Draft EIR has been scheduled for Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. before the County of Santa Clara Planning Commission. Pursuant to Government Code Section 54956, this is notice that the meeting will be conducted by virtual teleconference only. Separate notice for this meeting will be provided in the near future.

The project is a sand and gravel mining operation that includes an aggregate processing facility.

The project site is located in the Sargent Ranch property, approximately four miles south of the city of Gilroy, Calif., and approximately one mile south of the U.S. 101 and Highway 25 interchange.

The mined material would be extracted in four phases over 30 years and would be transported off-site by a combination of truck and train hauling. Final reclamation of the last surface mining phase and the aggregate processing facility would occur at the end of the Project’s life. The project requires adoption of a Reclamation Plan and issuance of a Conditional Use Permit for the 30-year life of the quarry.
