According to the News Leader, how far away from a quarry would a house have to be for you to consider living in it? Would that change if you worked for the quarry? That’s the question at the core of an ordinance considered by the Augusta County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 24. The debate is not over – the ordinance was tabled and several meetings between residents and company representatives are expected soon. The Jan. 24 debate had two sides. First are residents, who want mining operations farther away from their homes for safety, health and property value preservation. On the other side are the six sand and stone quarries across Augusta County who had little to no input on a new regulation on their industry that could substantially reduce the amount of land they can mine.
