“It’s remarkable that we’re here in Hilton Head because this is where it all started [for the group] 27 years ago,” said Aaron Ozinga, president of Ozinga Materials and Logistics and 2019 chairman of the Young Leaders Steering Committee. “The growth of this group since then, which started as a handful of people, is really something incredible.”

Bob Weldon, president of Weldon Materials Inc. and chairman of NSSGA, kicked off the event by expressing the importance of building a network of industry peers. Other guest speakers during the meeting included Micah Zeltwanger, CEO of Superior Industries, who gave an impassioned speech about company culture; and Tom Hill, CEO of Summit Materials, who spoke about private equity and vertical integration.

The meeting also featured a leadership workshop led by Echelon Front’s Mike Sarraille, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, and a community service project where attendees compiled care packages for military families. Additionally, the Rock Productssponsored Mark S. Walsh Leadership Award was presented to Brian Mahavier of U.S. Concrete for his continued commitment to the group and the industry.

NSSGA’s YL is a group of industry professionals 40 years old and younger. Education sessions and networking at the annual meeting help to develop leadership and management skills, address industry positions, build a national network of industry professionals, exchange ideas and discuss areas of mutual interest that help them and their companies become more successful in the aggregates industry.

The 2020 Young Leaders Annual Meeting will take place May 3-7, at La Playa Beach & Golf Club in Naples, Fla.
