April 10, 2018 – According to Politico, Canadian transportation minister Marc Garneau met with Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, telling reporters afterward that he reiterated Canada’s commitment to working with the U.S. government on the construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which would connect Detroit to Windsor. He also said that Canada still firmly backs the construction of a replacement for the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge, which also would span from Michigan to Ontario. “[W]e have given a permit to the Ambassador Bridge owners to build a replacement bridge, but that permit comes with conditions, and one of the conditions, which I reiterated, is that when the new bridge is built, the old bridge must be closed and dismantled,” Garneau said following the meeting. He said Chao as well as officials from DHS, received his point but “did not comment back to me.”
