November 24, 2013 – Want to go shake up Congress? Someone has to. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has established a Congressional Fellowship for mining for the 2014-2015 legislative session in Washington, D.C. The application process opens Dec. 1 and closes Dec. 31, 2013. The successful candidate will begin work in Washington Sept. 1, 2014, and conclude Aug. 31, 2015. A prospective Fellow must have a demonstrated record of success in research or scholarship in mining engineering, extractive metallurgy, economic geology, geological engineering, or environmental engineering. The Fellow must also demonstrate sensitivity toward policy issues and have a strong interest in applying scientific and technical knowledge to U.S. public policy issues. The Fellow must be able to work quickly and communicate effectively on a wide variety of topics and be able to work cooperatively with individuals having diverse viewpoints. An applicant is expected to be a& member of SME (or an applicant for membership) and have either a Doctorate or a Master’s degree with at least three years professional experience.
