On Tuesday, June 3, the Scottsboro Planning Commission held a meeting, with many citizens attending to voice their concerns about a planned quarry opening up on John T. Reid Parkway.
To begin the meeting, Cody Lambert of Lambert Contracting spoke about the planned limestone quarry. Lambert first stated that limestone is a foundation material, used in asphalt for roads and concrete for schools, hospitals and homes. There is currently no locally owned quarry in Jackson County. Lambert states that he would like to have this rock quarry to compete in the Huntsville and surrounding counties market, adding that the local source for limestone would add to the city’s self-sufficiency. Lambert estimates that this quarry would create 10 to 15 full-time career opportunities, with a projected economic impact of over $1 million per year in annual payroll.
