MREL Offers Velocity of Detonation Tools

Camera

Velocity of detonation (VOD) is cited as the performance specification for explosives. If you are not measuring VOD then you cannot be sure that your explosives are performing properly, according to MREL.

If you want to profile the VOD continuously along a sample of explosives or along an explosives column in a single blasthole, the world’s most affordable and easiest to use recorder is the HandiTrap II VOD Recorder.

You are paying for explosives to provide you with the energy your blasts need under your specific blasting conditions. The HandiTrap II VOD Recorder is used by mines and quarries to perform spot checks of explosives performance during blasts to compare the actual VOD results to the VOD specification published by the explosives manufacturer.

To visually capture high-rate phenomena, MREL carries a range of highly capable and powerful High-Speed Cameras.

High-speed video provides the ability to measure an event that happens quicker than a normal video can record. In a blast, a lot can happen in the time between frames of a standard camera because each frame is 33 milliseconds apart.

When trying to look at timing of the blast, for instance, most holes are timed to a single millisecond. This is where high speed video is very important. At a normal high speed frame rate of 1000 fps, this allows for a single picture every millisecond. When trying to look at the face profile and how it starts moving, high speed video will show how and when the toe of the shot starts moving as compared to the crest.

To analyze the data captured at your event, MREL provides its DAS Data Acquisition Suite with each of our Recorders.

The DAS Data Acquisition Suite allows the user to program (where applicable), download data and analyze all of the information at a click of a mouse. This is a user friendly software suite that will allow the user to process and analyze the data quickly and efficiently.

The DAS Data Acquisition Suite will allow the export of graphs for presentation of results into other programs like Word or PowerPoint. The software will allow quick and easy application of calibration formulas to sensors to convert the voltage graph into the desired engineering unit graph.

VOD measurements are simply done by the user placing the data cursor at the desired location on the graph. The DAS Data Acquisition Suite will allow the user quick return to recently reviewed graphs.

MREL provides the internet downloadable Standard Edition of DAS Data Acquisition Suite at no charge to all Customers using MREL’s HandiTrap II VOD Recorder, MicroTrap VOD/Data Recorder and DataTrap II Data/VOD Recorder. MREL also includes this Edition with each new recorder sold.

Manufacturer Advantage
Customers depend on manufacturers for their explosives. At explosives plants, the HandiTrap II VOD Recorder is used as part of the quality control process to test the VOD performance of samples of explosives including cartridges, boosters, detonating cord, bulk explosives of all types and military explosives.

At the customer’s blast site, technicians providing in-hole delivery of explosives use the HandiTrap II VOD Recorder to proactively document the VOD performance of the explosives being sold to the customer.
