The U.S. Senate confirmed Sean Duffy as secretary of transportation. Duffy was confirmed by a vote of 77 to 22.

The former reality TV star and Wisconsin congressman has promised safer Boeing planes, less regulation and help for U.S. companies developing self-driving cars.

In 1997, Duffy appeared on “The Real World: Boston,” the sixth season of the MTV reality television show, and on “Road Rules: All Stars” in 1998. Duffy has been an ESPN color commentator for televised competitions and in 2003 appeared as both a competitor and commentator on ESPN’s “Great Outdoor Games.”

He was elected to Congress from Wisconsin in 2010, and resigned in 2019.

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s Interim CEO Michele Stanley issued the following statement welcoming Duffy:

“We applaud the efforts of the Senate to confirm the nomination of former Rep. Sean Duffy quickly. His knowledge and experience, as a former member of Congress, is essential in leading the modernization of our transportation systems and the continued growth of our infrastructure networks. These systems are the economic circulatory system that our nation depends on for success.

“Certain, predictable funding is the foundation upon which the aggregates industry can address our nation’s infrastructure challenges. We are concerned about the implications that the administration’s executive order on freezing federal aid will have on our industry. We urge Secretary Duffy to work with industry stakeholders to find a solution that will provide for long-term certainty in both DOT federal aid programs and Highway Trust Fund revenues in order to continue boosting long-term U.S. competitiveness.”

“Sean Duffy is an excellent choice to serve as U.S. Transportation Secretary, and we look forward to working with him as he assumes his leadership role,” said American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Executive Director Jim Tymon. “With his experience navigating the political landscape as a member of Congress, Secretary Duffy will be a valuable partner to state departments of transportation in building a world class transportation system that benefits all Americans. From reauthorizing the next federal surface transportation bill to enhancing safety, mobility, and quality of life in communities across the country, AASHTO members are eager to collaborate with the Trump administration and Congress to deliver an effective and efficient transportation network for generations to come.”

American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) President and CEO Dave Bauer said, “Sean Duffy’s decisive confirmation as secretary is a testament that bipartisanship remains key to advancing meaningful transportation policy. We are eager to partner with him and the U.S. Department of Transportation team to highlight the vital economic and safety benefits of robust federal investment in highways, bridges, public transit, and airports, and to reduce the regulatory burdens that increase project costs and delays. We are also committed to helping Secretary Duffy bring President Trump’s vision for America’s future infrastructure to life as we prepare for the next long-term federal surface transportation authorization, due in fall 2026.”
