USGS Revises 2023 Production; Names Top Producers

According to Jason Christopher Willett of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) revised production statistics for 2023 have been released. A total of 2.52 billion metric tons (Gt) of construction aggregates were produced for consumption in the United States in 2023, revised up from 2.50 Gt, valued at $36.8 billion. 

The top construction aggregate producing companies in 2023 were, in descending order of tonnage, Vulcan Materials Co.; Martin Marietta Materials, Inc.; CRH Americas Materials Inc.; Heidelberg Materials; Holcim US; CEMEX USA; Summit Materials Inc.; Rogers Group Inc.; Knife River Corp.; Lhoist North America Inc.; Carmeuse Americas; Luck Stone Corp.; Arcosa Inc.; New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc.; CalPortland Co.; Granite Construction Inc.; Vecellio & Grogan Inc.; Dolese Bros. Co.; Teichert Inc.; and Colas Inc.

The top crushed stone producing companies in 2023 were, in descending order of tonnage, Vulcan Materials Co.; Martin Marietta Materials Inc.; CRH Americas Materials Inc.; Heidelberg Materials; Holcim US; CEMEX USA; Rogers Group Inc.; Summit Materials Inc.; Lhoist North America Inc; and Carmeuse Americas. 

In 2023, the combined production of the top 10 companies was essentially unchanged at 773 million metric tons (Mt) (50% of the national total). The combined production of the top 100 companies was 1.20 Gt (77% of the national total).

The top construction sand and gravel producing companies in 2023 were, in descending order of tonnage, CRH Americas Materials Inc.; Vulcan Materials Co.; Martin Marietta Materials Inc.; Knife River Corp.; Holcim US; Summit Materials Inc.; CEMEX USA; Heidelberg Materials; Granite Construction Inc.; and Teichert, Inc.  

The combined production of the top 10 companies decreased by 4% to 245 Mt (25% of the national total) compared with that in 2022. The combined production of the top 100 companies was 504 Mt (52% of the national total).
