According to the Post and Courier, a rock quarry planned for southwestern Edgefield County is a near certainty now that Luck Stone has received the necessary approvals from South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. Permit approvals came down Oct. 4 for the mining permit and air and water quality permits, opening up a 30-day appeals period. SCDES held a voluntary public hearing on each of the permits at Luck Stone’s request in August, during which only one local voice was heard, and this in support of the quarry, despite much public outcry earlier this year over what’s planned to be a 600,000-tpy operation off Woodlawn Road at the Edgefield-McCormick county line.
