Aggregates Production Decreases in First Quarter of 2023

The estimated U.S. output of construction aggregates produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter of 2023 was 459 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease compared with that of the same period of 2023, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)  Commodity Specialist Jason Christopher Willett.

The estimated production-for-consumption of construction aggregates in the first quarter of 2023 decreased in four of the nine geographic divisions compared with that sold or used in the first quarter of 2022.

Production-for-consumption decreased in 17 of the 41 states that were estimated. The five leading states were, in descending order of production-for-consumption, Texas, Florida, California, Missouri and Georgia. Their combined total production-for-consumption was 152 Mt, a decrease of 8.7% when compared with that of the same period of 2022.

An estimated 300 Mt of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2023, a slight increase compared with that of the same period of 2022.

The estimated production-for-consumption of crushed stone in the first quarter of 2023 increased in six of the nine geographic divisions compared with that sold or used in the first quarter of 2022. Production-for-consumption increased in 29 of the 45 states for which estimates were made.

The five leading states were, in descending order of production-for-consumption, Texas, Florida, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Their combined total production-for-consumption was 114 Mt, unchanged compared with that of the same period of 2022.

The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter of 2023 was 160 Mt, a decrease of 8.8% compared with that of the same period of 2022.

The estimated production-for-consumption of construction sand and gravel in the first quarter of 2023 decreased from that of first quarter 2022 in four of the nine geographic divisions.

Production-for-consumption decreased in 23 of the 44 states for which estimates were made. The five leading states were, in descending order of production-for-consumption, Texas, California, Arizona, Florida and Colorado. Their combined total production-for-consumption was 58.5 Mt, a decrease of 16.2% when compared with that of the same period of 2022.

Shipments of portland and blended cement decreased by 2.7% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the first quarter of 2022. This information was obtained from the USGS monthly survey of U.S. cement producers.

The above estimates are based on information reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on its quarterly sample survey by construction aggregates producers.

USGS also reported that the U.S. total for 2021 was revised using full-year sales data provided by the companies. Estimates for 2022 were recalculated using the revised total for 2021.

  • The revised U.S. total of crushed stone in 2021 was 1.51 billion metric tons (Gt). The estimate for the 2022 U.S. total is slightly less than 1.51 million Gt.
  • The revised U.S. total of construction sand and gravel in 2021 was 943 Mt. The estimate for the 2022 U.S. total was 927 Mt.
