You Make Your Own Luck

Jan. 25, 2023 – Almost 10 years ago, I visited Luck Stone’s Bull Run Quarry in Chantilly Va., to see a demonstration of an unmanned haul truck. “The company takes pride in its reputation as a collaborative partner that unearths innovative solutions to help our customers be more successful,” the company told me at the time. Well, it is still true today. The company recently embarked on a collaboration with Caterpillar to officially deploy autonomous solutions at that same plant. This will be Caterpillar’s first autonomous deployment in the aggregates industry and will expand the company’s autonomous truck fleet to include the 100-ton-class (90-tonne-class) Cat 777. It is fitting that Luck Stone is ground zero for this Caterpillar technological milestone. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Luck Companies, and a successful 100 years it has been. I recently spoke with Charlie Luck IV, CEO of Luck Companies and grandson of the founder, about the company’s embrace of innovative technology and its 100 years in business.
