Dec. 12, 2022 – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says that Northern Filter Media has operated just south of Muscatine, Iowa, for more than a hundred years, processing sand and gravel to be used in municipal water treatment plants and for other purposes. In 1985, the company installed a new burner in its dryer. The dryer was subsequently renovated in 2002, 2017 and 2020, DNR records show. “Northern Filter Media has operated the sand dryer unpermitted since its installation and the renovations,” a recent DNR order revealed. The company was fined $10,000, according to an article in The Gazette.
