MSHA Reports First Fatality of 2022

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported that on Jan. 7, a 49-year-old front-end loader operator with 15 years of mining experience died at Arcosa’s Fayette County, Pa., operation when a large rock fell from the mine roof, crushing the cab of the front-end loader. When the accident occurred, the victim was loading material from a recently blasted shot.

NSSGA Opposes Gas Tax Holiday Proposals

House Democrats are discussing suspending the gas tax through the rest of the year, while Senate Democrats also discussed the idea during a closed-door caucus lunch, according to media reports. But the idea is getting pushback from GOP senators, whose support the legislation would need to ultimately pass, as well as some Democrats who are signaling early skepticism.

Vulcan Makes Executive Appointments

Vulcan Materials Co. announced that Suzanne Wood has decided to retire as senior vice president and chief financial officer, effective Sept. 1, 2022. Wood will then remain with the company in a consulting capacity until the end of the year. The board of directors has appointed Mary Andrews Carlisle, vice president – finance, as Wood’s successor, effective Sept. 1.
