Mark Williams Named USA’s Top Environmental Leader by NSSGA

Mark Williams

Mark Williams, environmental manager at Luck Companies, has been recognized by the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) with its 2019 Environmental Leadership Award.

“We are so proud of Mark for earning the industry’s highest honor given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and made noteworthy contributions in the field of environmental stewardship,” said Charlie Luck, president and CEO of Luck Companies. “Mark constantly challenges our associates to explore opportunities that will evolve our environmental work so that we can continue to make a positive impact on our communities and neighbors.”

Williams joined Luck Companies in 2005 and has served as environmental manager since 2008. In that capacity, he leads implementation of the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS) across the entire footprint of the corporate enterprise. He was a key influencer in helping Luck Companies win the Gold Medal in the 2014 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards.

Also, he has been instrumental in maintaining the company’s participation in the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP) at the Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) level. VEEP is an initiative of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to encourage superior environmental performance by organizations within the Commonwealth, and Luck Stone facilities have maintained zero notices of violations over the past four years due to the leadership of Williams and his talented team.

Throughout his career, Williams has made significant contributions to the environmental progress of the aggregates and mining industry. Involved in the NSSGA’s Environmental Committee for a number of years, he currently serves as chairman.

Prior to that position, he led the Water Task Force for two years. During that period, he often joined NSSGA staff in visiting legislators on Capitol Hill to help explain the aggregates’ industry’s position in implementing a fair and equitable Waters of the United States (WOTUS) solution. Additionally, he is certified as a Professional Wetland Delineator by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Active in environmental efforts at the state level, he is a past chairman and current member of the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance’s (VTCA) Environmental Committee. He has been very involved in the past two DEQ renewals of the Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System’s water discharge permits by participating in DEQ feedback sessions and guiding the VTCA’s response to the proposed permits.

In the local community where Luck Companies is headquartered, Williams serves in a leadership role with Friends of Goochland Parks, a volunteer organization whose purpose is to enrich the recreational and leisure opportunities for Goochland County citizens and visitors through the county’s park system. His advice is often sought on strategies to protect, preserve and showcase the natural and historic features of the parks in Goochland County.

“Congratulations to Mark and his family on this well-deserved recognition,” concluded Charlie Luck. “He is a respected role model in his area of influence and he consistently emulates Luck Companies’ values of Leadership, Integrity, Commitment and Creativity.”
