2020 Marks 25

The aggregates industry is a great place to spend a career. I should know, I have left and returned several times.

I first started covering this industry in 1987. I left in 1990 but I returned in 1996. I left again in 2008, but came back in 2010. When you do the math, add up the years and fractions of years, 2020 will be my 25th year covering the aggregates industry.

When you look at it in terms of decades, with the 2020s upon us, I have covered the aggregates industry in five different decades. That is a lot of experience.

And experience matters.

Last month, I broke the news that Rock Products acquired Aggregates Manager – the biggest aggregates industry media merger maybe ever. While we value the addition of AggMan’s print and digital media circulation, and value the opportunity to now own and publish their industry-standard “Aggregates Industry Atlas,” what is equally important is that former Aggregates Manager Editor-in-Chief Therese Dunphy will now write for us. That means another 25-plus years of experience on-staff. Our excellent Associate Editor Josephine Patterson has been here almost 10 years as well.

Rock Products now has more than 60 years of editorial experience on-staff, far and away the most of any construction-materials industry publication. Experience matters. Because you can trust the perspective and context we bring to the table in covering this industry for you.

As I embark upon my 25th year, I am not blowing the candles out on the cake. Not even close to retiring. In fact, I have never been more energized and optimistic about the industry’s possibilities. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

As we make our way through what is sure to be an eventful year, look for several blockbuster, 25th anniversary editorial pieces from me. I have a few great ideas cooking that I am sure you will find interesting.

As I said, the aggregates industry is a great place to spend a career. I should know, I have left and returned several times. I am not leaving again.
