AN ESTIMATED 607 MILLION METRIC TONS OF TOTAL CONSTRUCTION AGGREGATES WAS PRODUCED AND SHIPPED FOR CONSUMPTION IN THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2015.

An estimated 607 million metric tons (Mt) of total construction aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2015, an increase of 3 percent compared with that of the second quarter of 2014, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
“The estimated production for consumption in the first six months of 2015 was 994 Mt, an increase of 5 percent compared with that of the same period of 2014,” said Jason Willett, USGS crushed stone commodity specialist.
An estimated 360 Mt of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the second quarter of 2015, an increase of 5 percent compared with that of the second quarter of 2014. The estimated production for consumption in the first six months of 2015 was 589 Mt, an increase of 6 percent compared with that of the same period of 2014.
The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the second quarter of 2015 was 247 Mt, a very slight increase compared with that of the second quarter of 2014. The estimated production for consumption in the first six months of 2015 was 405 Mt, an increase of 4 percent compared with that of the same period of 2014.
The above estimates are based on information reported to USGS on its quarterly sample survey by construction aggregates producers.
Portland (including blended) cement consumption increased by 2.3 percent in the second quarter of 2015 compared with that of the second quarter of 2014. Consumption in the first 6 months of 2015 increased by 3.6 percent compared with that of the same period of 2014.
This information is obtained from the USGS monthly survey of U.S. cement producers.
Production for consumption increased in 24 of the 43 states that were estimated. The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio. Their combined total production for consumption was 175 Mt, an increase of 5 percent and represented 29 percent of the U.S. total.
The estimated production for consumption of construction aggregates in the second quarter of 2015 decreased in four of the nine geographic divisions compared with that sold or used in the second quarter of 2014. The largest decreases in percentages were recorded in the West South Central, West North Central, and the Mountain divisions.
Production for consumption increased in 32 of the 46 states that were estimated. The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. Their combined total production for consumption was 116 Mt, an increase of 9 percent and represented 32 percent of the U.S. total.
The estimated production for consumption of crushed stone in the second quarter of 2015 decreased in two of the nine geographic divisions compared with that sold or used in the second quarter of 2014. The decreases in percentages were recorded in the West North Central and the Pacific divisions.
Production for consumption decreased in 24 of the 45 states that were estimated. The five leading states, in descending order of production for consumption, were California, Texas, Michigan, Minnesota and Arizona. Their combined total production for consumption was 84.6 Mt, an increase of 4 percent and represented 34 percent of the U.S. total.
