Aug. 28, 2015 – Maybe it should have been called “Take a Senator to Work Day.” In its ongoing push for congressional action on a multi-year surface transportation reauthorization, the North Carolina Aggregates Association helped organize a tour for Republican Sen. Thom Tillis. Martin Marietta hosted the tour at the Garner Quarry in Garner, N.C. Participants of the tour were able to discuss with Sen. Tillis the importance of Congress agreeing on a federal funding source that will ensure the stability and sustainability of the Highway Trust Fund, as well as speaking about the potentially adverse impacts of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule, the need for regulatory reform and MSHA rules and enforcement. The group later met with Rep. George Holding, R-NC-13, to discuss the same topics. NSSGA is encouraging state associations and quarry operations all over the country to engage in this kind of grassroots lobbying.
