Martin Marietta to Participate in River Clean Up

Martin Marietta Materials will participate in this year’s 12th annual Upper Guadalupe River Authority (URGA) clean-up on July 25. The company will join more than 300 volunteers in an effort to preserve the Guadalupe River’s aesthetics and water quality. This will be Martin Marietta’s sixth consecutive year providing volunteers to the cleanup effort.

“Martin Marietta is a proud community partner and we look forward to participating in this year’s river clean up. Central Texas has been greatly affected by recent rains and flooding and we want to do our part to help restore the area to its natural beauty,” said Chance Allen, regional vice president of Martin Marietta – Central Texas Aggregates.

UGRA’s mission is to conserve and reclaim surface water through the preservation and distribution of the water resources for future growth. UGRA coordinates this service every year and relies on hundreds of volunteers to help preserve the Guadalupe River. More volunteers registered for this year’s event than in previous years.

“The Upper Guadalupe River Authority aims to clean about 20 miles of the Guadalupe River, including creeks and large drainages in the watershed that might generate trash. We are thankful for Martin Marietta’s commitment to the cleanup effort, as this is their sixth year participating. They will be helping restore parts of the river that were previously inaccessible.” Tara Bushnoe, Natural Resources Coordinator for UGRA said.

Martin Marietta employs 360 San Antonio-area residents, of whom 106 operate the Beckman Quarry. Martin Marietta recently selected the Beckmann Quarry as one of its 2014 Honor Plants. The Honor Plant program was developed in 1986 by Martin Marietta to honor its quarries that excel in safety, environmental protection, public service and production practices. The program focuses on employees’ efforts to be good stewards of land and good community neighbors. The Beckmann Quarry is one of seven quarries nationwide to receive the honor.
