Presque Isle Quarry Raises $35,000 for Charity

Lafarge North America’s Presque Isle Quarry in Michigan celebrated its 60th anniversary by hosting its first annual Stoneport 5K Quarry Run/Walk on Aug., 28, 2014, to benefit the Cancer Center at Alpena Regional Medical Center (ARMC). After the event, Lafarge held a post-race open house celebration for the community at the Lafarge site.

Lafarge representatives proudly presented a check for the $35,000 raised through the participation of close to 300 racers as well as additional event sponsorships, donations and raffles to the Cancer Center, which provides comprehensive cancer care to the residents of Northeast Michigan in partnership with the University of Michigan.

“We are thankful to this generous community, as well as our many sponsors and volunteers, for making our event a huge success,” said Allan Idalski, plant manager at the Lafarge Presque Isle quarry. “The result surpassed our expectations in terms of runners participating, money raised and community members attending our post-race anniversary celebration,” Idalski added. “We couldn’t be happier for the Cancer Center and more grateful to the community for supporting Lafarge and this quarry over the years and helping us contribute to building better cities and communities in Michigan.”

“Congratulations to Lafarge Presque Isle on their 60th anniversary. We are honored that they chose the Alpena Cancer Center as a beneficiary of this event,” said Karmon Bjella, chief executive officer, Alpena Regional Medical Center. “The Alpena Cancer Center is a valuable asset to the communities in northeast Michigan and this substantial contribution will assist in providing the best technology to continue our quality cancer care for the residents. We sincerely thank the entire team at Lafarge for their support.”

State Representatives Andrea LaFontaine and Peter Petallia, joined the more than 1,000 participants who attended the open house following the race, and presented the Lafarge Presque Isle Quarry with a special tribute on behalf of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder in recognition of the quarry’s 60 years of contributions to the community.
