  • Northern Frac Proppants II LLC is looking to rezone more than 570 acres of land to start a sand processing and loading facility in Cleveland, Wis., and will have a public hearing on the request, according to the Jackson County Chronicle. The proposal includes sand mining, processing and a rail spur for transportation. The county has three other processing operations that include Badger Mining, Taylor Frac and Goose Landing. The county also has two operational dig-and-haul sand sites and another 11 proposed dig-and-haul or processing operations, according to county data.
  • A frac sand mine has turned into a legal landmine in Eau Claire County, Wis., according to WQOW-TV. Reports said it all started when the state DNR started getting dust complaints from residents. The dust came from a 200,000-ton silica sand pile near Augusta, Wis., that had not moved in a while. The DNR told the mine’s operator ¬– Five-Star Properties of La Crosse – to explain what was going on, and the company responded by saying Five-Star was to deliver the sand to a plant in Oklahoma run by Cardinal Glass Industries. However, Five-Star said it never received the money for the project.  
  • What appears to be the last major hurdle for a new frac sand mine was crossed when the Glenwood City, Minn., council voted 4-2 to annex the mine land into the city, giving local control of the controversial project to the city, according to twincities.com. Last month the council approved a mining agreement with Texas-based Vista Sand, which also has agreed to a memorandum of understanding with the School District of Glenwood City over issues relating to the mine.
