Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3,941,085 tons in August, a near carbon copy of both a year ago and July of this year, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association. Limestone cargos also bettered the month’s five-year average by 5.8 percent.

Lakes Limestone Trade Strong Again in July
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3,985,544 tons in July, an increase of 3.1 percent compared to a year ago. The trade also bettered the month’s five-year average by 5.5 percent, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association.

The coldest April since 1997 put a chill on the Great Lakes limestone trade. Shipments totaled just 1,254,226 net tons, a decrease of 23 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association. Loadings trailed the month’s five-year average by even more – 33.3 percent.

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 28 million tons in 2017, an increase of 6.4 percent compared to 2016, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association. The 2017 loadings were also 2.1 percent above the trade’s five-year average.
