fractum GmbH Rock Breakers

In the ultra-heavyweight category of breakers, the top contender isn't a conventional hydraulic hammer. With energy ratings from 59,000 to almost 260,000 ft-lb and an impact frequency of seven strokes per minute, rock breakers from fractum GmbH are claimed to provide certain operational advantages when compared with drop balls, hydraulic hammers and blasting. The technology is simple: a coupler picks up a hammerhead, lifts it to the top of a tube, releases it and as the hammerhead drops and hits, the energy released on impact fragments the target object. The newest version, the 14.5-metric-ton fractum 400, is the largest of four breakers and, according to fractum, offers power and energy equivalent to a drop-ball. The Swiss company says the breaker fits any excavator or wheel loader. Its simple design requires minimal maintenance, and repairs can be managed on site.

The manufacturer also says the hammer is quieter than hydraulic hammers, and the breaker generates less flyrock on impact so nearby work can proceed without interruption. It should be noted that these breakers deliver maximum impact energy when operated in a vertical position. However, they can be used in a slightly tilted position if absolutely necessary, but the company does not recommend a tilt beyond 30 degrees. fractum GmbH
