Joseph W. Roth, a senior at Missouri University of Science & Technology, has received the 11th annual Barry K. Wendt Memorial Scholarship from the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association in conjunction with the Aggregates Foundation for Technology, Research and Education.

Roth, a resident of Omaha, Neb., is pursuing a bachelor's degree in mining engineering with a minor in explosives engineering. He is the president of Missouri S&T's NSSGA student chapter and is completing an internship with Austin Powder Co. “I am confident that Joseph Roth is the real deal and…will be an asset to the organization he chooses after graduation,” notes Jerry Carter, a manager with Austin Powder.

NSSGA, under the auspices of AFTRE, established the Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award and Memorial Scholarship in 1998 as a memorial to recognize the many contributions that Barry Wendt made to the aggregates industry. The $2,500 scholarship is earmarked for students who plan to pursue a career in the aggregate production industry. A long-time employee of Cedarapids Inc., Wendt died in 1997. He was recognized as a leader in the aggregates industry.

Roth was chosen as the award's 11th recipient by a panel of judges from the national trade association. He was selected for academic excellence as well as for his personal interest in the aggregates industry.
