Vari-Stem’s blast-improvement plugs can be placed directly on top of the ANFO. The company says its plugs increase rock fragmentation, improve cap-rock breakage, and reduce rock fly. The plugs are designed for positive insertion. This adds to the structural strength and prevents the detonating cord from being crushed or pulled into the drill hole during plug insertion, the company says.
