Komatsu America and Komatsu Mining Systems recently unveiled several new products at Field Days 2001 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The event included a tour of Komatsu's Chattanooga manufacturing facility and demonstrations of the new products.

Product additions showcased at the event were a swing excavator, wheel loader, mobile crusher, motor grader and a new series of dozers.

PC228USLC-3 excavator

The 51,765-lb PC228USLC-3 is the latest addition to Komatsu America's tight tail swing excavator family. Enhancements to the excavators include a redesigned cab, increased power levels and components, and a longer undercarriage. It has a short tail swing radius and occupies a maximum road width of 13 ft 5 in., allowing the machine to work in one lane. Design features include extended digging height to 34 ft 11 in.; bigger bucket capacity (2 cu yd); increased bucket digging force of 31,085 lb; and increased arm crowd force of 22,708 lb.

The 143-hp, six-cylinder Komatsu SAA6D102E engine boosts hydraulic power. The four-cycle, water-cooled, direct injection engine meets current TIER II emissions regulations, including CARB, EPA and EC.

The excavator has three working active modes: full power, breaker and fuel saving. Safety features include a boom holding valve to reduce hydraulic drift of the boom and a pump/engine room that prevents oil from spraying on the engine if the hydraulic hose should burst.

Komstat series dozers

Komatsu America's Komstat line of dozers include technology that enables the dozers to outperform standard models with ease of cutting across slopes, ability to work in tight conditions and easy turning, according to the company. The D39EX/PX-21 is the first model to be introduced.

The hydrostatic transmission features three forward and three reverse speeds that reduce machine cycle-time through faster ground speeds — up to 5.3 mph in forward and reverse. The line also includes Palm Command Steering. Minimum turning radius for a D39EX-21 is 11 ft 6 in.; for the D39PX-21, 12 ft 2 in.

The 18,191-lb D39EX-21 and the 19,030-lb D39PX-21 both have a 95-hp Komatsu SAA4D102E engine and the largest blades in their class with capacities of 2.52 cu yd and 2.69 cu yd, respectively. The D39EX-21 is available with a standard length undercarriage, while the D39PX-21 features a longer, wider undercarriage. The truck gauge is 65 in. for the D39EX-21 and 70 in. for the D39PX-21.

BR550JG-1 mobile crusher

The 104,720-lb BR550JG-1 mobile jaw crusher is designed primarily for mobile crushing applications. Komatsu incorporated its Hydraumind technology in the newest member of its mobile crusher family. The system supplies the optimal amount of oil through load-sensing and pressure compensated valves, sensing overloads and automatically slowing feed down, according to the company.

The Komatsu built FS4430 jaw crusher allows for adjustment settings from 2.7 to 9 in. OSS. Powered by the Komatsu 306-hp SAA6D125E-2 engine, the crusher offers an output range of 110 to 507 tph.

WA120-3 Avance Plus wheel loader

The newest addition to the Avance Plus family of wheel loaders is the WA120-3MC. It is powered by a turbocharge 100-hp engine with an operating weight of 18,110 lb, a breakout force of 16,280 lb and a bucket range of 1.7 to 2.5 cu yd. Rubber mounts have been placed under cab floor corners and on the hydraulic components to reduce cab vibration and noise to 75 dBa. Standard on the loader is an automatic four-speed transmission. The four forward and four reverse speeds of the electronically controlled automatic transmission permit travel speeds to 22 mph.

A transmission kickdown switch on the boom lever facilitates loading operations by improving tractive effort during digging and loading. The kick-down switch automatically downshifts from second to first when beginning the digging cycle. It automatically upshifts from first to second when the direction control lever is placed in reverse, according to the manufacturer.

The loader is equipped with wet disc service, parking brakes and a fuel strainer with clear sediment and water trap. Check out the latest information on the Avance Plus wheel loader line at www.avanceplus.com.

Laterra series motor graders

The Laterra line of motor graders consists of three motor grader models, the GD555A-3, GD655A-3 and GD675A-3. The models range in operating weight from 30,525 to 34,390 lb and in horsepower from 140 to 200 hp. Variable horsepower is available for all models. The Laterra series features a dual-mode transmission that allows the operator to move from torque converter to direct drive mode by flipping a switch. Safety features include a roll-over protective structure and a falling-object protective structure.

The motor grader line is equipped with a digital message center that minimizes unplanned downtime by monitoring and tracking the operating condition of the machine and providing diagnostic data. The system constantly monitors different elements of the machine such as engine coolant level, engine coolant temperature, hydraulic oil temperature, transmission oil temperature, transmission clutch pressure and the brake system.
