First-Quarter Aggregate Production Increased 6%

Estimated crushed stone production in the United States in the first quarter of 1998 was 251.8 million metric tons (mt), an increase of 7.6% compared with the same period of 1997. Estimated construction sand and gravel produced for consumption in the first quarter of 1998 was 157.6 million mt, an increase of 3.6% compared with the same period in 1997. Total aggregate production increased 6% in the first quarter.

Increased aggregate production is due mostly to continued high-level activity in private and commercial construction. Crushed stone production in the first quarter increased in all regions of the country except the South Atlantic; sand and gravel production increased in all geographic regions except the West North Central and the Pacific.
