The United States Senate confirmed Mary Peters as Secretary for the Department of Transportation by unanimous consent on Sept. 30. Peters was previously reported to the Senate by the Commerce Committee by a unanimous vote of 22 to 0. Peters served as Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration from 2001 to 2005 and prior to that spent three years directing the Arizona Department of Transportation.

"I am pleased that the Senate swiftly confirmed Mary Peters," President Bush said in a prepared statement. "Mary is an innovative thinker who will work with state and local leaders to confront challenges and solve problems. I look forward to working with her to reduce highway and aviation congestion, modernize our nation's infrastructure, and increase the efficiency of travel in our country."
