The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association has announced its support for the Americans for Transportation Mobility coalition's FasterBetterSafer campaign and is asking its members to join by directing them to the Web site, http://www.fasterbettersafer.org. ìThe foundation of our economy depends on an integrated transportation network to move goods and people safely and cost-effectively,î says NSSGA President Joy Wilson. ìThis campaign ties investment in that infrastructure to America's economic strength and our very quality of life.î
The FasterBetterSafer campaign is a nationwide effort by business, labor, transportation organizations and concerned citizens that supports increased federal investment in transportation. Its goal is to demonstrate to policy-makers in Washington the groundswell of public support for repairing, rebuilding and revitalizing America's aging transportation system.
The nation's transportation system continues to deteriorate, jeopardizing safety, the economy and the environment, NSSGA reports. Recent studies show that increased investment in transportation not only stimulates the economy and creates jobs, but also reduces the human costs imposed by congestion, pollution and needless highway fatalities. In 2005, traffic congestion alone drained $78 billion from the economy, added 4.2 billon hours to commutes, and wasted 2.9 billion gallons of gasoline.
