Pennsy Supply, Harrisburg, Pa., recently designed and built a driving range for its employees ó 18 ìholesî to help improve the safe performance of the company's 180 truck drivers. Pennsy drivers maneuver a variety of vehicles through the course (set up with flags, like a golf course) and are scored on how well they do. The course took 200 man hours to construct. Twelve of the 18 obstacles are based on backing up the trucks. ìThe majority of construction vehicle accidents occur while backing up,î says Ken Stambaugh, Pennsy transportation manager.
Part of the Mid-Atlantic Group of Oldcastle Materials, Pennsy supplies aggregate, concrete and asphalt to southcentral Pennsylvania. The company operates nine quarries and has more than 500 employees.
