Poll: Don’t Raise Gas Taxes

A majority of Americans believe new transportation projects should be paid for with user-fees instead of tax increases, according to a new national Reason-Rupe poll of 1,200 adults on cell phones and land lines.

New Home Sales Edge Up

Sales of newly built, single-family homes edged up 1.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 315,000 units in November, according to newly released figures by the U.S. Commerce Department. This marks the third consecutive monthly gain in new-home sales and the fastest pace of such activity since April.

Vulcan Directors Reject Martin Marietta Offer

Vulcan Materials Co.’s Board of Directors, after consultation with its independent financial and legal advisors, unanimously determined that the Martin Marietta Materials Inc. exchange offer to acquire Vulcan at a fixed exchange ratio of 0.50 shares of Martin Marietta common stock for each Vulcan common share is inadequate and not in the best interests of Vulcan and its shareholders. Accordingly, the Board strongly recommends that shareholders not tender any shares to Martin Marietta.

MSHA Issues Fatality Update

According to MSHA, on Dec. 8, 2011, a 41-year-old crusher operator with eight years of experience was killed at a surface stone operation. A set of wheels was to be placed on a conveyor to transport it from the mine.

USGS Releases Production Statistics

According to Jason Willet, crushed stone commodity specialist for USGS, an estimated 619 million metric tons (Mt) of total aggregates was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the third quarter of 2011, a very slight increase compared with that of the same period of 2010. The estimated production for consumption in the first nine months of 2011 was 1.48 billion metric tons (Gt), a slight decrease compared with that of the same period of 2010.
