Roanoke Cement Company's five cement terminals were honored for reaching a combined 50 years without a lost-time accident. "Safety is one of our core values," says Sam Giles, the company's safety manager. "Our terminals' achieving a cumulative 50-plus years with no lost-time accidents demonstrates that our philosophy is more than a collection of words; it shows the accomplishment reflects a true charge of the organization."

The Roanoke Cement terminals are moving towards partnering with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the Federal Voluntary Protection Program and with the Carolina Star Program, sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Division. Each program recognizes worksites that are self-sufficient in their ability to control hazards and improve safety beyond just compliance. In both programs, companies have frequent opportunities to provide state and federal agencies with input on safety and health matters and can serve as models in their industries.

"Each manager and employee at the terminals embraces this process with enthusiasm," says Giles. "The terminals have a great achievement behind them, but demonstrate the values of safety and continuous improvement every day at their operations. The employees have a lot to be proud of."

Roanoke Cement Company is a subsidiary of Titan America. The recognized terminals are at: Castle Hayne, N.C.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Front Royal, Va.; Norfolk, Va.; and Richmond, Va.
