Pennsy Supply Inc. received a permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that allows a 184-acre expansion of the Small Mountain Quarry in Luzerne County, Pa., according to a report in the Central Penn Business Journal, Harrisburg, Pa. Under the permit, the quarry could expand to nearly 317 acres. The plan still needs local zoning approvals and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must give final approval to a habitat plan for a type of bat.
“We're pleased over the DEP permit and feel our engineers have worked diligently to design a state-of-the-art project that will protect health, safety and welfare of the community,” company General Manager Patrick Bartorillo told the local media. An attorney is working to stop the quarry due to concerns raised by community members that include, among other issues, the possibility of wetlands being impacted by possible water contamination.
