Lafarge Steps Up Plan To Cut Cement Emissions

European Union funding has supported Lafargeís development of Aether, a new clinker formulation that reduces the carbon dioxide footprint of cement. Testing in the laboratory, as well as in an industrial kiln, has demonstrated the productís potential to provide technical properties comparable to traditional Portland cement while cutting CO2 emissions.

A traditional cement plant kilnóafter a few modificationsóis suitable for Aether production. The new formula reduces the level of limestone and thus increases the part of gypsum, clay and bauxite, providing a 25% CO2 emissions reduction. Additionally, a lower firing temperature (~1300∞C) to achieve the chemical reaction decreases energy consumption by 15%.

Collaborating with the producer on the project to minimize CO2 emissions are the Institute for Building Materials in Poland and the British Building Research Establishment. Lafarge's research and development teams, comprising 500 members, celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Technology Center site near Lyon, France.
