The Irwindale, Calif., chamber of commerce awarded Vulcan Materials' Western Division its 2010 Solid Waste Reduction Award.
ìWe take the role of environmental stewardship seriously,î said Charles St. John, Vulcanís regional environmental manager. ìAll Vulcan employees are committed to helping maintain a safe and healthy community. Our effort to reduce solid waste is just one of the many ways Vulcan works to protect the environment and the communities where we operate.î
In 2009, Vulcan recycled an estimated 300,000 tires in the production of rubberized asphalt. These tires would have otherwise taken up space in local landfills.
Vulcan also received special recognition from Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), who presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition praising Vulcan for ìextraordinary work, outstanding leadership and achievement in significantly reducing your carbon footprint.î
