Way to Goat!

On April 22, Graniterock welcomed a herd of goats and their kids along with the guard dog “Baby” and her puppies “in training” at the Santa Cruz Sand Plant. The goats are being used as part of a holistic management plan to decrease the amount of non-native grasses in the area and encourage growth of natives, according to a story on the company’s blog.

Sustainability Is Driving Major Change Within The Supply Chain

It is quite clear today that the drive toward greater sustainability, including resource conservation and energy efficiency in North America and other parts of the world, is occurring at a much faster pace than many experts predicted. Sustainability now affects a rapidly growing percentage of infrastructure and commercial and residential projects that are defined and funded by local, state/provincial and federal governments, as well as public institutions and private enterprises.

Lehigh Hanson Plant Achieves Energy Star Challenge

Lehigh Hanson Inc., Irving, Texas, announced that its Mission Valley Rock plant in Sunol, Calif., is the first aggregates production site to achieve the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Challenge for Industry. The Mission Valley Rock plant reduced its energy intensity by 12.2 percent within one year. This accomplishment is equivalent to 28,987 mmBtus of annual source energy avoided and 817 MT of annual CO2e avoided.

New Engine Meets Emissions Regulations

John Deere Power Systems introduced the PowerTech PWL 4.5L engine, which will meet Final Tier 4/Stage IV emissions regulations without a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The 63 kW to 104 kW (85 hp to 140 hp) engine was announced at bauma 2013 in Munich, and complements the John Deere lineup of Final Tier 4/Stage IV off-highway diesel engines rated 36 kW to 448 kW (48 hp to 600 hp) announced earlier.

Caterpillar Included in Sustainability Yearbook

Caterpillar is included in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook 2013. On Jan. 22, Caterpillar received notification of inclusion in the Yearbook in the Industrial Engineering sector and was congratulated by RobecoSAM for outstanding achievements in the area of sustainability.
