Industry Pioneer Charles Samuel Luck III Dies

On Dec. 1, Charles Samuel Luck III passed away in his home at the age of 87.

Luck was long devoted to the company his father started in 1923 and the people who comprised it. He worked through all areas of the business and was a champion for the aggregates industry.

Charles S. Luck III

He led Luck Companies for some three decades and provided leadership for the industry, having served as chairman of the National Crushed Stone Association, a precursor to the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA). Beyond the accomplishments of his resume are the many lives he touched throughout his life.

He graduated in 1955 from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and proudly served in the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. Beyond providing an exceptional education to him, Charles credited VMI with instilling the sense of rigor, ethics and leadership he needed to effectively run the successful business his father founded. He remained active in VMI’s administration for the remainder of his life, establishing a scholarship program and serving on the board of visitors, Alumni Association, and Foundation.

A true pioneer in the aggregates industry, his commitment to progress through innovation revolutionized the way his thriving family business, Luck Companies, operates and serves others. Established by his father in 1923, he grew up working in and learning about the quarrying business, eventually leading Luck Companies (formerly Luck Stone Corp.) through three decades of expansion and technological advancement.

“We at NSSGA express our sincere condolences to the Luck family and Luck Companies employees for their loss,” NSSGA said in a statement.
