LafargeHolcim Touts Quarries Honored by NSSGA

The Lafarge Presque Isle Quarry in Presque Isle, Mich., was honored with a Gold Award in Community Relations Excellence from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA).

Additionally, the Presque Isle Quarry will receive NSSGA’s Two Stars of Excellence Award. This unique award recognizes operations that receive multiple Gold Awards for Safety, Environmental or Community Relations Excellence within five years. The operation received an Environmental Gold Award in 2018.

“We are proud of our teams here at LafargeHolcim for their ongoing efforts to reach new levels of excellence in their operations,” said Jay Moreau, CEO, U.S. Aggregate Construction Materials. “It’s exciting to see this national recognition for Presque Isle for building strong, long-lasting relationships within its community and for Chelsea Gravel for its care of the environment in and around its operations.”

The Chelsea Sand & Gravel Pit in Michigan was awarded a Bronze for its Community Relations program. In the Environmental Excellence category, Marblehead Quarry in Ohio, Lockport Quarry in New York and Peabody Quarry in Massachusetts all received the Silver Award. Fulks Belvedere Sand & Gravel in Virginia and Glen Rose Sand & Gravel Mine in Texas were awarded the Bronze.

“These awards help demonstrate LafargeHolcim’s commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and community involvement,” said Michael W. Johnson, NSSGA president and CEO. “Strong community relations programs and a focus on environmentally sound operations are paramount to showing the benefits of the aggregates industry to our neighbors and members of Congress.”

NSSGA began the two awards programs to recognize aggregate producers who help enhance the public perception of the industry and their individual operations by supporting local communities and exceeding technical, environmental and regulatory requirements.

The NSSGA Community Relations Awards program, introduced nearly 30 years ago, highlights operations that have supported their communities through local events, donations and volunteer services, local and state government involvement, media relations and educational opportunities.

The Environmental Excellence Awards provide national recognition for NSSGA producer member operations that actively contribute to environmental maintenance in their operations through a commitment to the exemplary use of environmental systems and controls.

NSSGA will recognize gold award-winning operations during the association’s general sessions at its Legislative & Policy Forum on Nov. 18-20. Presque Isle Quarry, along with the other gold recipients, are also eligible for the Platinum Award, which will be presented during the event to the highest-rated gold award recipient according to members who judged the applications.
