Cemex USA held the first-ever Quarry Quest 5k race at its FEC Quarry in Miami to support nearly 38,000 South Florida Boy Scouts. Close to 350 runners and walkers participated in a timed race, following a course that weaved through FEC Quarry.

Cemex employees set up large equipment from the operation for participants to learn about and view along the course. After all participants crossed the finish line, Cemex representatives presented the South Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America with a $10,000 donation check from the Cemex Foundation, its philanthropic organization that provides charitable and community support.

“Cemex is committed to building a better future while nurturing long-lasting relationships in the communities where we live and operate,” said Kirk Light, Cemex USA regional president – Florida Region. “FEC Quarry has led by example with constant efforts to contribute to South Florida while teaching our neighbors about our facility and how it is integral in the construction of roads, buildings and infrastructure they use every day.”

In addition to Quarry Quest 5k, Cemex actively hosts tours of FEC Quarry, routinely welcoming business and civic groups to the operation, so community members can learn about the facility. Local, state and congressional lawmakers are also frequent guests at the quarry where they are educated on the value of aggregates.

This year, FEC Quarry earned the 2018 National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) Platinum Community Relations Award as well as the NSSGA’s Two Stars of Excellence Award in recognition of the community relations award on top of the Environmental Excellence Gold Award it received in 2017.

“Cemex’s strong corporate partnership with the Boy Scouts allows us to reach even more young people in our community with programs that may influence them with future career choices,” said Cliff Freiwald, program director, South Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America. “We thank Cemex for continuing to support our Scouts by coordinating programs that give them an incredible opportunity and hands-on experience.”

FEC Quarry was established in 1974 and currently is Cemex’s second largest aggregate-producing operation in the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey recently ranked FEC Quarry third in the nation in production volume among crushed stone quarries.
