Vulcan’s Irwindale Facility Achieves ISO 14001 Re-Certification

The Western Division of Vulcan Materials Co. has been recognized by The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) with 14001 recertification for its Reliance facility, located in Irwindale, Calif.

Vulcan’s Reliance facility, which produces asphalt and construction aggregates, has maintained this certification for eight years as a pro-active measure to decrease its environmental footprint through continuous improvement measures. By maintaining ISO 14001 certification, Vulcan is continuing to meet the needs of the growing green construction market while also promoting sustainability.

ISO 14001 is the international standard that details requirements necessary for an effective environmental management system (EMS). Participation in the ISO 14001 process is voluntary.

The program established at the Reliance facility includes 19 individual continuous improvement projects with a 20th project currently in the development stage. These projects include recycling programs for aluminum, steel, paper, asphalt and rare metals, lighting upgrades to conserve electricity, repowered diesel equipment to address particulate and fuel emissions, and a plant-wide dust control system.

“Each of the projects is critical to Vulcan’s continuous improvement efforts. Our Reliance team takes great pride in always looking for innovative and appropriate methods to address resource consumption and waste reduction,” according to John Janke, environmental specialist for Vulcan’s Southern California sites.

“We are proud to receive the ISO 14001 certification, with its recognition of our environmental stewardship,” said Brian Anderson, Vulcan’s vice president of property permitting and environment. “Vulcan continues to maximize opportunities to manage our business effectively while also being mindful of the environment and the communities we serve.”
