Aggregate Industries Travilah Quarry Hosts Open House

Travilah Quarry, owned by Aggregate Industries US (AIUS), held its 19th annual Earth Day Open House in Rockville, Md., where more than 2,200 members of the community celebrated Earth Day, learned about operations at the site and helped quarry employees raise money for a local nonprofit.

“Supporting our local communities is part of our culture at AIUS,” said Cedric Barthelemy, head of the mid-Atlantic region for AIUS. “Events likes these are one of the many ways we show our appreciation to our neighbors while also helping them understand what we do on site at our quarries and plants.”

The free open house featured music from a local DJ, food, children’s activities and two pie-eating contests. Visitors were also given guided bus tours of the quarry where they learned how stone is mined, processed and used in constructing roads, buildings and environmental projects.

Travilah Quarry employees also sold commemorative T-shirts and other items during the event to support the Friends of the Library Quince Orchard Chapter, a nonprofit organization that assists the local library and promotes lifelong learning in the community. This year, employees raised more than $2,000 towards new books, movies and educational materials for the organization. Since its first open house in 1992, Travilah Quarry has raised more than $60,000 for the community through this event.

Several sponsors supported this year’s open house, including Montgomery County Recycling, Dyno Nobel, Saul’s Seismic, Solar City, Friends of the Library, Montgomery County Fire Department and North Potomac Times. In addition, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources provided a local Boy Scout troop with tree seedlings, which they handed out for free to attendees during the event.
