Rod Martin received the 2016 Mark S. Walsh Leadership Award at the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) Young Leaders Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. Martin is the third-generation executive of Bechtelsville, Pa.-based Martin Stone Quarries Inc..

The Mark S. Walsh Annual Leadership Award is sponsored by Rock Products, and was presented by Associate Editor Josephine Smith.

The award was created in memory of Mark S. Walsh, comptroller of Rein, Shultz and Dahl, and an active member of the Young Leaders Steering Committee. He was an energetic and enthusiastic supporter of the mission, purpose and activities of the Young Leaders group. Walsh was 37 years old when he passed away of leukemia in 1999.

“It is a pleasure to present this year’s award to a person who not only grew up in the aggregates business, but has become a true leader in our industry,” said Brian Mahavier, Young Leaders chair and vice president of strategy and development at U.S. Concrete. “Rod is an advocate for aggregates at the state level and rallies support at the national level through NSSGA’s government affairs committee.”

In memory of Walsh’s leadership and commitment to the Young Leaders, the steering committee created the Mark S. Walsh Annual Leadership Award to be given to an individual that exemplifies the leadership traits of professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment and whose efforts in improving and developing the image and programs of the Young Leaders are in keeping with Walsh’s example.

“Rod has shown his dedication to Young Leaders and NSSGA through his leadership at all levels. He was a very active member of the Young Leaders and rarely missed an event,” said Chris Upp, of Conco Quarries Inc., a former chair of Young Leaders and the 2015 recipient of the Walsh award. “He has continued his involvement in NSSGA through leading the grassroots network of political action. Rod is a perfect example of what Young Leaders is all about.”
