Turin Talks Hard Work, Happiness at Young Leaders Luncheon

Dave Turin of the hit Discovery Channel TV show “Gold Rush” gave the keynote address at the NSSGA’s Young Leaders luncheon, sponsored by Rock Products, and his message of hard work, family first and finding personal happiness had everyone in the room clapping.

The event was part of NSSGA’s annual convention in Baltimore, held in conjunction with AGG1 and the World of Asphalt.

A former high school and college football star, Turin earned a civil engineering degree before joining the family aggregates business, Mt. Hood Rock, in Oregon. Turin has managed the asphalt production and rock quarry company with his father and three brothers for more than two decades.

In 2010, hometown friends brought him in as an outside consultant at their Porcupine Creek, Alaska, gold prospecting claim. He helped the rookie miners get their Alaskan operation running and was inspired by their dream of mining for gold. Turin was offered the chance to join the team full time and has regularly appeared on “Gold Rush” since its second season.

Rock Products Editor Mark Kuhar had the honor of introducing Turin at the luncheon, stressing that Turin’s background in the aggregates industry is sometimes lost as his reputation as a gold miner has increased over the years.

Turin told the gathering of Young Leaders that they are the future of the industry, and they need to stay in the industry and work hard. However, he warned them to learn from his example and not neglect family, as he did early in his life. That is one of the keys to happiness.

Turin also talked about his experience on the TV show “Gold Rush,” and how that has given him the leverage to become a spokesman for responsible natural resource exploration.

Turin’s appearance at the luncheon was sponsored by Superior Industries.
