Boehner Says No

Congress-150

Jan. 9, 2015 – House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), speaking to reporters, dumped a few gallons of cold water on the idea of a gas tax hike: “I’ve never voted to raise the gas tax. Funding a highway bill is critically important, it’s a priority for Congress-400
this year, how we’ll fund it we’re going to have to work our way through this. It’s doubtful that the votes are here to raise the gas tax.” Asked for further clarification, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel emailed: “The Speaker doesn’t support a gas tax hike. Period.” It isn’t the best news when the House’s main man draws that kind of line in the sand. But a House majority has bypassed him with their will before. Let’s hope history repeats itself.
