The Beckmann Quarry, owned and operated by Martin Marietta Materials, celebrated a milestone of reaching two million consecutively logged employee hours without a reportable incident or incident of lost time. This covers a period that stretches back to 2007.
“I am very proud of the team at the Beckmann Quarry for putting safety first. Reaching two million logged hours without reportable incidents is a difficult task for any quarry to achieve, especially considering the size of the operation in San Antonio and number of people employed. I want to congratulate every employee for doing his or her part to reach this goal and for ensuring that every person who enters the Beckmann Quarry safely returns home to their friends and families,” said Chance Allen, regional vice president of Martin Marietta – Central Texas Aggregates.
The Beckmann Quarry has been consistently recognized for its safety and environmental stewardship. Earlier this year, Martin Marietta named the Beckmann Quarry as one of its 2014 Honor Plants.
The Honor Plant program was developed in 1986 by Martin Marietta to honor its quarries that excel in safety, environmental protection, public service and production practices. In 2013, the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association (TACA) awarded the quarry 1st Place in Safety for the 5A Aggregates Division and in 2012 the quarry received the TACA Safety Award for Zero Lost Time.
Martin Marietta’s Beckmann Quarry has a rich history in San Antonio, and has been safely operated for more than 70 years. Major San Antonio attractions such as Six Flags Fiesta Texas, The Shops at La Cantera and The Shops at the Rim have been repurposed from parts of the Beckmann Quarry that have been mined out. The quarry continues to safely operate as a neighbor to these properties.
“For years, the labor invested in the Beckman Quarry has supported local families throughout our community. I’m proud to celebrate this achievement today and to recognize that locally sourced materials, produced by local hands, have helped build a strong and growing San Antonio,” local Councilman Ron Nirenberg said.
Martin Marietta employs 360 San Antonio-area residents, of whom 106 operate the Beckmann Quarry.
