National Lime and Stone Acquires Lash Paving

The National Lime and Stone Co. and Lash Paving, Inc. announced that the two companies have completed a transaction through which Lash Paving will become a wholly owned subsidiary of National Lime and Stone. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Based in Findlay, Ohio, National Lime and Stone is a premier provider of crushed stone, sand and gravel, and mineral products. Lash Paving, based in Martins Ferry, Ohio, is a family-owned asphalt producer and paving contractor that has served state departments of transportation in the upper Ohio Valley, and commercial and residential paving projects for nearly 35 years. Company founder and owner David P. Lash, Jr. will continue to assist with the business on a consulting basis.

“Dave Lash has built his company into a highly successful business, and this transaction will provide National Lime and Stone with expanded capabilities to serve its customers in eastern Ohio,” said Carleton P. Palmer, III, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of National Lime and Stone. “We welcome the Lash Paving employees to our team. They will be essential to our combined company’s continued success.”

In addition, National Lime and Stone announced that Brian Varrato has joined the company as vice president – Asphalt Manufacturing and Paving Operations. Varrato will have oversight responsibilities for the Lash Paving acquisition. Previously, he spent more than 16 years with Shelly & Sands Inc., where he most recently served as Columbus Area Manager. “Brian brings extensive industry and civil engineering experience to National Lime and Stone, which will benefit our operations,” Palmer said. “He will work closely with our management team to integrate the operations of Lash Paving with our existing platform in eastern Ohio.”

Lash Paving operates three asphalt plants located in Martins Ferry, Cadiz and Empire, all in eastern Ohio. The company designs and produces asphalt for commercial, municipal and state projects as well as private in-plant pickup. Its range of capabilities includes river aggregate transfer, milling, paving, asphalt production, light excavation/piping and trucking.

National Lime and Stone has 13 aggregate operations throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. These sites are largely supplied by the company’s rail quarries, which have direct service from four primary rail carriers (CSX Corporation, Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company, Norfolk Southern, and Genesee & Wyoming Inc.) as well as multiple secondary connections. Building on its 110-year history, the company has added eight locations during the past three years and continues to evaluate opportunities for growth in this region.
