Oldcastle Materials, Shelly Co. Honored for Wildlife Habitats

The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) honored Oldcastle Materials at its 25th annual symposium, “Celebrating Corporate Conservation,” in Baltimore on Nov. 13-14.

Oldcastle Materials was one of only three finalists for the Conservation Education Award, which recognizes an organization’s overall commitment to establishing and maintaining conservation education programs and to engaging its employees and surrounding communities in hands-on experiences with nature.

“It is a great honor to be singled out as one of the top three companies participating in the Wildlife Habitat Council program,” said John Hay, Oldcastle senior vice president for corporate relations. “Oldcastle Materials works hard to bring mined lands to a condition even better and healthier than before mining operations began, and it is rewarding to be recognized for these efforts. Our commitment to sustainability is wide-ranging and includes many environmentally friendly initiatives, but these habitats are the most visual and obvious examples of that work.”

The Shelly Co., an Oldcastle Materials company that operates in Ohio, earned two awards for its wildlife habitat sites.

Its Dresden Wildlife Habitat Site was named the Corporate Lands for Learning of the Year for outstanding environmental education, stewardship and voluntary employee efforts. The Ostrander Wildlife Habitat Site was awarded the 2013 Prairies for Tomorrow award by the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever organization for it outstanding prairie restoration project.

Two new Oldcastle Materials sites — Harrisonville (APAC Kansas) and Winter Springs (APAC Southeast, Florida) – earned certification as Wildlife at Work programs, and the Ostrander site was certified as a Corporate Lands for Learning site. Two Wildlife at Work sites – Petersburg (The Shelly Co.) and Colchester (Tilcon Connecticut) were recertified, and the Dresden site was recertified as a Corporate Lands for Learning site.

Oldcastle Materials has 17 certified wildlife habitat sites nationwide.
