Frac Sand Plant to Pay Air Pollution Fine

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said a Marshfield, Wis., operation involved with frac sand has been ordered to pay $80,000 for violating state air pollution control laws, according to WAOW TV.

Completion Industrial Minerals LLC failed to comply with several Department of Natural Resources regulations, including that it continued to construct its facility after a construction permit expired and it failed to keep daily records of precautions to stop fugitive dust, Van Hollen said.

The violations occurred at the company’s frac sand processing facility after permits were issued in 2009 to build it, the attorney general said in a statement. Completion Industrial Minerals is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.

An investigation started In January 2012 following a complaint of sand and dust blowing off of waste sand and stockpiles, according to records. “Completion cooperated with the DNR and addressed the violations soon after the violations were discovered,” Van Hollen said.

The $80,000 settlement, approved by a Wood County judge, represents forfeitures, court costs and surcharges for 16 violations of the company’s air-pollution control construction permit and air pollution control laws, Van Hollen said.
