Lafarge Canada has registered an extension project for an environmental assessment to expand its quarry in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, while ensuring a stable supply of aggregates for the southern Nova Scotia construction industry, said Alex Kenney, general manager for Atlantic Ready Mix/Lafarge Canada Inc.
The Yarmouth Hardscratch Road quarry has operated since 2005, according to Nova News. It is reaching its “maximum disturbed area” and the company is looking to extend its current extraction activities into additional lands owned by Lafarge. Employment levels (one to six workers, depending on site activities) are expected to remain unchanged following site extension.
The expansion will occupy a total of 65 hectares, of which 42 hectares will be used for quarry activities and the remaining 23 hectares will be set aside as a wetlands protection area.
No quarry or development activity will occur in this environmentally sensitive area, noted the company.
Kenney stated the company has worked closely with local neighbors and community stakeholders to ensure they are aware of the proposal and had the opportunity to provide feedback.
“We have taken into account all comments and feedback received into our planning and welcome any additional feedback. Our current day-to-day activities are not expected to change as a result of this proposed expansion and it is business as usual,” he said.
