Frac Sand Show a Success

On June 5-7, Rock Products and the Frac Sand Insider hosted the inaugural Frac Sand Insider 2013 Conference and Exhibition at The Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh. More than 200 manufacturers, producers, consultants and others with an interest in the fast-evolving frac sand market attended the event.

Frac Sand Insider 2013 was designed to be a focused, informative event tailored to both experienced frac sand producers and companies just entering the industry. The event was sponsored by BDP Industries; FMC Technologies; Martin Engineering; McLanahan Corp.; Polydeck Screen Corp; and W.S. Tyler.

“For a first-time show, we consider the event a great success,” said Show Manager Cory Smith. “There were a number of attendees just breaking into the market and looking for equipment, so many of our exhibitors found that attendees took a keen interest in their products and services.”

The event kicked off with a tour of Heyl & Patterson’s pilot plant testing lab facility. Attendees got a first-hand look at how frac sand is tested to determine its usability in the hydraulic fracturing process.

Educational sessions at the show included:

  • An Economic Analysis of Industrial Sand Operations; Economic Benefits and Costs to State and Local Communities.
  • Hydraulic Frac Sand Exploration & Evaluation Deposits.
  • How to Design and Build an Efficient Trans-Load Facility.
  • Overcome NIMBY Opposition: Managing the Politics of Permitting.
  • Understanding Frac Sand Requirements – How To Get There from Here.
  • Conveyor Systems – Essentials to Maintenance and Avoiding Catastrophic Failure.
  • Design-Build of Transload Facilities – Transportation Logistics.
  • Making Product in Spec.
  • Wet and Dry Frac Sand Production.
  • Frac Sand Drying Techniques.
  • Overcoming Challenges Obtaining Special Use Permits for Industrial Sand Mining.

“The educational sessions included something for everyone,” said Mark Kuhar, editor of Rock Products and the Frac Sand Insider newsletter. “Both new producers and seasoned veterans were able to gain new insights on the frac sand market, and learn new production tips.”
